Was this discrimination?
I work at an aprtment complex and their was a shooting on our proprerty right across from where I work. I went to my manager and expressed to her my concerns. She then preceeded to say to me "well don't you live in the city?" Basically saying that I should be used to shootings since I live in the city. It shouldn' matter where I'm from, I shouldn't have to get used to shootings. What are my rights here?

I hate to say it, but its not discrimination, i do believe though that the employer is obligated to provide a safe work environment, and if you feel threatened i would take it over her head to the next person in line. if that does no good, you could have a law suit on youre hands for mental anguish etc.
What's the problem? Not happy with where you work?
Try finding another job.
Nothing...maybe the area is too afraid to do anything and expect others to..as you are and and do.
I'm not certain what you're getting at. You can always quit your job if you're unhappy with the location...what is your manager supposed to do to decrease crime in the area?
What do you want her to do? Issue flak vests and k-pots?
i dont quite see where anything you have typed would be considered discrimination.
Discrimination would mean that she kept you from gaining something due to race, color, age, sex or sexual preference.
it's not discrimination, just ignorance.
Nice to see how much she cares about the people living in the complex, and their safety though.
Your manager sounds like an idiot. But, just being an idiot doesn't mean you were the victim of discrimination.
Trying to sort out what you're saying... you WORK at this apt. complex, and your manager indicated that you shouldn't be alarmed by a shooting because you live in the city.
She's ignorant. I live in a city too (a fairly segregated city; my husband teaches at an inner-city highschool that's at least 90% black, and my daughter will be going to city schools). Before we moved here, white people would tell us how "dangerous" it was and how we had to move to the suburbs; we couldn't send our daughter to anything but a private school here. Whatever. There is crime everywhere. The suburbs have it too. People who think they're "safe" because they live in gated communities amongst more people of their own color are living with their heads in the sand.
If you don't like the job, look for something else (discretely). My guess is your boss probably does harbor prejudice; if your city was all white, she probably wouldn't imply that it was dangerous.
You have the right to quit or stay. If you choose to stay, you have the right to suggest things like additional security and the boss has the right to accept or reject your suggestions.
