What can I do if my Dr refuses to give me a copy of my medical records?

I have had a cat scan and my Dr will not release the results to me, even when I personally request them WITH identification. Do I have any course of action against him, when the office claims the only way they will release them is if I schedule an appointment, and pay for another visit. I do not WANT another visit, I just want my test results!
Answer:   Candy,

You could threaten them to report the doctor/office to your state board of health...I dunno if it'll do any good. Probably get tied up in ten years of red tape before anything is done about it.

You could go to an attorney...they're your records, you're entitled to them...they can charge you a copying charge per page (most do), but that's about it.
actually hes right you had it taken for a reason and he has to give you the results, are you going to another doctor if so maybe they can get them for you, arent you at least curious to see what your results are, what he they found something, wouldnt you want to know
CALL THE " BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU " OR PHYSICIANS REFERRAL SERVICE OR A 24 HOUR NURSE HOT;LINE AND TRY TO GET SOME LOGICAL ANSWERS. MY FEELING IS IF THEY WERENT NORMAL THEY WOULD GET HOLD OF YOU HOWEVER IT SEEMS THEY SHOULD INFORM YOU OF THE RESULTS REGARDLESS. YOUR DOCTORS OFFICE MAY FEEL THAT ONCE YOU GET THE RESULTS YOU JUST WANT TO VENTURE OFF TO ANOTHER TREATMENT FACILITY. ( WHICH , IN MY MIND SHOULD BE YOUR DECISION TO MAKE ) NOT THEIRS.
The hospital where you had the tests will give them to you for a small fee.The doctor by law must give them to you, go In person. If you are not given them, call the state district attorney's office.I live In Texas, they always helped me with many things..Call The American Medical Association and ask them to send you a letter, after they request the tests, telling you why he refuses to do so. If you owe him money that is still no excuse to refuse you.Call the district attorney for your city first! Your medical records are yours by law.
ASK FOR THE RESULTS IN WRITING BY WAY OF CERTIFIED MAIL
WITH A RETURN RECIPT REQUEST.

AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LETTER COPY THE STATE MEDICAL BOARD.

CLEARLY STATE YOUR MAILING ADDRESS AND BE POLITE!
You are entitled to these by law. I had an incident with a doctor who wouldn't cough up my records. The secretary understood the law quite well and complied instantly.
I don't understand. I have never heard of this before. You own those records, tests, cat scan, whatever your doctor does, you pay for. He is holding your property. You should be able to call them and tell them you want EVERYTHING they have, tell them when you will be picking it up and they should hand it over.

I would call a local attorney and ask what you can do. I was looking at my chart in one of my doctor's offices. They had left it in the exam room with me. When the doctor returned he told me I shouldn't be reading my chart. I couldn't believe he said that to me. I asked him why not, it belonged to me, it was about me and what was in there he didn't want me to read????? Needless to say, that ended that argument.

Call them back one more time. Perhaps you misunderstood something. When they say no, then tell them your attorney will call next and hang up.
